Promoting Social-Emotional Competence: Protecting Children from Bullying Whether children are victims, bystanders, or bullies, bullying behaviors hurt. Mariposa can help. Mariposa Child Success Programs is pleased to present a new online anti-bullying program. Promoting Social-Emotional Competence: Protecting Children from Bullying is the result of a yearlong joint development effort between Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) and Mariposa. Mariposa has delivered anti-bullying seminars and training programs in schools, child care centers, and community agencies for years. Now, an online version of our anti-bullying program is available free to City Schools’ families, teachers, and administrators. The online program is just one of many elements of Mariposa’s Promoting Social-Emotional Competence Program, which includes seminars, in-person counseling, and school-based trainings. One of the best ways to prevent and address bullying is to enhance social-emotional competence, which helps children to get along with each other, feel good about themselves, problem solve, resolve conflicts effectively, and manage emotions. Social-emotional competence now helps children grow into tomorrow’s healthy, happy, and successful adults. Mariposa offers the only anti-bullying program that actually trains families and educators in skills they can use immediately to address problems, not just understand them. Promoting Social-Emotional Competence: Protecting Children from Bullying enables educators and families to develop effective methods for decreasing bullying and improving child outcomes. The online program includes separate tracks for families and educators that teach five essential skills adults can use to promote social-emotional competence in young people, along with methods to utilize those skills. Each 45–60-minute lesson provides informative and practical techniques and includes:
In addition, Mariposa offers ready-to-go, in-person training programs to complement the online program and help you develop a customized plan unique to your needs. All of Mariposa’s programs include dedicated family and educator tracks to serve all of a school’s constituencies. These programs can help schools to meet their parent engagement objectives and professional development goals. Research shows the relationship between bullying and violence and the effect of bullying on children’s school performance, physical well-being, and mental health. Programs are needed to address bullying, effect change, and help schools and states achieve mandated outcomes. Promoting Social-Emotional Competence: Protecting Children from Bullying:
How Does It Work? The root of bullying and other behavioral problems in children is compromised Social-Emotional Competence or SEC. SEC is the educational process that leads to the development of social-emotional intelligence and competence and helps people develop the skills to handle themselves in the world, manage relationships, and work through challenging situations constructively. SEC allows children to manage themselves, their relationships, and their work effectively and ethically. It leads to better outcomes for children, families, schools, and communities.
