Mariposa Child Success Programs

Mariposa Child Success Programs

Our nation's frequent failure to attend to the emotional needs
of children as they develop has dire consequences.

The Children's Defense Fund (March 2008) presents these alarming statistics in the context of a single day in America:

  • Every second a public school student is suspended
  • Every 10 seconds a high school student drops out
  • Every 25 seconds a child is arrested
  • Every 36 seconds a child is confirmed abused or neglected
  • Every minute a baby is born to a teen mother
  • Every 5 minutes a child is arrested for a drug offense
  • Every 9 minutes a child is arrested for a violent crime
  • Every 3 hours a child is killed by a firearm
  • Every 5 hours a child or teen commits suicide
  • Every 6 hours a child is killed by abuse or neglect

While the nation's average IQ has risen 24 points since the 1980s, we have yet to apply that increased intelligence to the challenges of child development. Parents spend precious little time in meaningful conversation with their children. Childcare workers are not well-trained in promoting healthy communication problem-solving, and self-control. School educators lack training in the realms off social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. At no point in childhood are children actually being taught the skills that foster social and emotional competence.

Mariposa Child Success Programs fill a critical need for parenting education and professional training that fosters the emotional health and well-being of children today.

The good news is that we know what works. Research has identified the key behaviors and skills that parents, professionals, and children need to learn for healthy development. Mariposa's training program is based upon that research and has been tested with both parents and professionals in child care centers, Head Start programs, public, private, and charter schools. Mariposa has found that adults are eager and able to learn the skills that make them more effective in raising emotionally healthy children.

Mariposa aims to expand parenting education and professional training in the areas of children's social and emotional development as broadly as possible, to communities across the spectrum of races, incomes, and backgrounds. And when we are successful, a day in the life of children in America will look very different…with fewer school suspensions, dropouts, delinquencies, suicides, and tragic deaths. We work, with you, for the day when all children are secure and successful in their homes, their schools, and their communities.
