Promoting Early School Success
(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development and Professionalism)
Teachers know the importance of helping their children acquire intellectual skills for success in school and life. It is just as important, however, for children to master their emotions. Based on research linking children’s early social and emotional competence with academic success, the promoting Early School Success workshop aims to identify the need for social and emotional competence in children for their health and well being. By learning the 5 Essential Skills for Child Success, child care workers can foster social and emotional competence in their children through effective communications. This program engages child care workers in meaningful discussions and practice of these learned skills to ultimately improve the health and behavior of their students.
Who’s in Charge? Part 1: Empathy- Building Trust
(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development)
For child-care providers, power struggles can put a strain on their relationship with children. This workshop helps child care providers understand the underlying messages behind children’s behaviors. Empathy involves the ability to communicate these needs and emotions back to the child in a manner in which the child is about to hear. Participants learn how to apply empathy in realistic scenarios using a combination of role-play, demonstrations, and written exercises.
Who’s in Charge? Part 2: Personal Message - Creating Balance
(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development)
Personal Messages provide child care workers with the tools to communicate to students in a respectful and positive manner. Participants will learn how to create personal messages and apply them to typical stressful classroom and child care center settings. They will also learn communication and collaborative problem solving skills that provide a foundation for behavioral strategies such as rewards and consequences.
Will You Be My Friend? Building Social Competence in the Young Child
(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development)
Bullying, teasing and social exclusion begin in preschool, and children need healthy coping skills and tools for handling conflict. Caregivers will learn how to increase social competence in the classroom and acquire skills for handling social problems such as bullying and social exclusion.

(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development)

Separation: Helping Children Through Transitions
(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development)
Many parents feel guilty about going off to work and leaving their children behind. And many children act out when they go off to school, leaving their parents behind and their teachers confused and helpless. In this class teachers will learn what contributes to healthy separation and how they can help.
Alternatives to Punishment: Managing Behavior and Increasing Self-Discipline
(.2 CEU or 2 clock hours; Core of Knowledge, Child Development)
This workshop provides the tools for understanding the roots of a child’s misbehavior and teaches strategies for handling them. Too often we only deal with the behavior, which is futile when we do not understand the child’s motivating needs and misunderstandings about how to get this need met. These erroneous beliefs underlie all misbehavior. Three clues to understanding these mistaken beliefs will be presented and tools for managing the accompanying behaviors will be taught. This workshop provides the tools for setting limits and enforcing consequences effectively.
