The Solution: 5 Key Behaviors
Research has shown that children who feel listened to and understood are physiologically calmer and more adept at independent problem solving. When appropriate guidelines are offered and explained to children, they, in turn, become able to structure their obstacles and engage in effective self-discipline. These competencies do not only reinforce cognitive development, they actually lead to improved cognitive functioning.
Rather than focus solely on behavior modification at the expense of dealing with emotions, or to rely too heavily on addressing emotional state at the expense of developing problem-solving skills, it is essential that adults know how to help their children in a systematic, appropriate way. It is not enough for just parents or just teachers to strive to develop these skills. The child's system must be saturated with capable adults who commit to modeling social and emotional health and desire to transform the way communities together raise children.
