Our Method
Children develop their strongest SEL skills through positive relationships with supportive adults.
The Mariposa Method is a relationship-based approach to social-emotional learning (SEL) that shifts the focus from managing children’s behavior to building adult capacity. At its core is a simple yet powerful belief: children learn SEL skills best through emotionally supportive relationships—not through direct instruction, reward systems, or punishment.

How does it work?
We shift the focus from “fixing” children’s behavior to equipping adults with practical skills to support kids through challenging moments. Instead of using rewards or punishments, it builds empathy, self-motivation, and helps adults respond with calm and connection.

Our programs meet all nine Harvard criteria for effective social-emotional learning (SEL) training, ensuring they are research-backed, comprehensive, and aligned with best practices.

With 50+ years of combined research and classroom expertise, our method is a trusted, proven approach to social-emotional learning.

We continuously refine our method based on current psychological research and feedback from over 34K adults and 100K children who have experienced it.
What Makes The Mariposa Method Effective?
Our Method Is Based In Brain-Science
Our approach is rooted in neuroscience: when the brain perceives social threat, it triggers a cortisol-driven stress response that impairs listening, learning, and problem solving.Â
We begin by lowering stress—because meaningful social emotional development can only take place when the brain feels “safe.”
We Teach Practical Skills for Everyday Life
We break down big concepts and lifestyle shifts into easily digestible sections and skills and offer flexible learning options for busy schedules.
By practicing in familiar contexts, adults build confidence and consistency, making these skills a natural part of their daily interactions and decision-making.
The Mariposa Method Comprises 5 Skills
Research shows that children develop social-emotional resilience when adults consistently use these five skills. You don’t have to be born with them—we’ll teach you why they’re important and how to use them effectively.
